Nightclub fire in Ecuador kills 14

Fireworks gone awry during a concert killed 14 concertgoers and injured 16 others at a Quito, Ecuador, nightclub, the Red Cross confirmed.

The victims, ages 19 to 26, were watching a local rock band play at Factory at about 4 p.m., said Red Cross spokesman Henry Ochoa.

The fireworks were part of the show, and officials have deemed the incident an accident.

The nightclub blaze recalls a 2003 incident in which 100 people were killed at a nightclub in the U.S. state of Rhode Island. In that case, the then-road manager for the rock band Great White set off fireworks, which ignited foam insulation behind the stage and ultimately engulfed the crowded building in flames.
